Health benefits of orgasms

There are a surprising number of benefits to enjoying an orgasm. Both men and women can see huge health benefits from enjoying the company of their partner, or themselves.

They help you get to sleep

Orgasms have been shown to lead to an increase in certain sleep-aiding chemicals in the brain. These include oxytocin, noradrenaline (norepinephrine), vasopressin and serotonin. This cocktail of chemicals is well know to help you nod off.

They help lower stress

As well as aiding in sleep, Serotonin has a well known calming effect. It is in fact one of the main ingredients in the anti-depressant Prozac. The stress reduction caused by an orgasm can be so powerful in fact, that some studies have shown lowered levels of stress and a lower blood pressure for as much as two weeks after an orgasm.

They reduce the risk of heart attacks

During an orgasm, your bloodstream gets flooded with a variety of hormones and a steroid called Dehydroepiandrosterone or DHEA. This steroid has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attack in middle-aged men. A study carried out by the New England research institute found that men who had sex at least twice per week were 50% less likely to have a heart attack.

Women also benefit; with studies showing that women who had 2 orgasms a week were 30% less likely to have a heart attack.

They are great for your skin

When we orgasm, increased blood flow to the skin causes blood vessels to open up, giving a flushed look to the face. Regular orgasms, over time, help carry important nutrients to the skin, improving your complexion. Many anti-aging products contain the hormone DEA, the levels of which soar to five times their normal amounts within your body post-orgasm. Why pay for expensive anti-aging products?

They strengthen your immune system

Having sex a couple of times per week has been shown to increase your amounts of immunoglobin A, an antibody that fights infections, as well as things like the common cold. Having sex too often, however, has been found to lower your immunoglobin reserves. So, make sure to pace yourself.

Those were just a few examples of the benefits you can get by having the occasional orgasm.
